Finite element analysis of human joints: image processing and meshing issues
نویسندگان
چکیده
Our work focuses on the development of nite element models (FEMs) that describe the biomechanics of human joints. Finite element modeling is becoming a standard tool in industrial applications. In highly complex problems such as those found in biomechanics research, however, the full potential of FEMs is just beginning to be explored, due to the absence of precise, high resolution medical data and the diiculties encountered in converting these enormous datasets into a form that is usable in FEMs. With increasing computing speed and memory available, it is now feasible to address these challenges. We address the rst by acquiring data with a high resolution X-ray CT scanner and the latter by developing a semi-automated method for generating the volumetric meshes used in the FEM. Issues related to tomographic reconstruction, volume segmenta-tion, the use of extracted surfaces to generate volumetric hexahedral meshes, and applications of the FEM are described Keywords : Computed tomography { volume segmen-tation { surface extraction { grid generation { nite elements { biomechanics { human joints

The finite element method (FEM) has established itself as a powerful tool in biomechanics. However, developing a finite element three dimensional mesh for irregular geometry object is still a labor intensive task hence limits the usage of the three dimensional analysis for dental structures. This study presented an automatic procedure to generate the three dimensional finite element mesh of a m...

Unit cell homogenization techniques are frequently used together with the finite element method to compute effective mechanical properties for a wide range of different composites and heterogeneous materials systems. For systems with very complicated material arrangements, mesh generation can be a considerable obstacle to usage of these techniques. In this work, pixel(2D) and voxel(3D) based me...
